Welcome to Macomb – a place where history harmonizes with modern life, and where music finds a natural home.

Nestled in the heart of Western Illinois, it is more than just the home of Square Music Company; it’s a town with a unique rhythm, a rich history, and a vibrant cultural pulse. Here, the echoes of Abraham Lincoln’s footsteps meet the creative energy of a dynamic university town, and unforgettable stories are woven into the very fabric of the community.

Pulsing with a distinct musical energy, much of it flowing from the heart of Western Illinois University and its acclaimed School of Music. With diverse programs in jazz, music business, performance, education, and composition, alongside countless student and faculty concerts throughout the year, WIU fills our town with exceptional talent and a passion for sound.

Macomb is near the heart of the legendary ‘Republic of Forgottonia,’ a spirited and clever 1970’s movement where local citizens humorously declared independence to shine a light on our region – a story of resilience and ingenuity that still brings a smile and captures our can-do spirit. Adding to our distinct heritage, we are also the birthplace of Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ Magie, the ingenious inventor of ‘The Landlord’s Game,’ the very game that evolved into the worldwide phenomenon of Monopoly! We invite you to celebrate this inventive legacy with us, perhaps even with a visit to see ‘Macombopoly,’ the world’s largest Monopoly board, right here on our historic town square. The city’s origins date back to 1829 when it was first settled by John Baker, a Baptist minister, under the name Washington. A year later, in 1830, it was officially designated the county seat of McDonough County and renamed in honor of General Alexander Macomb, a distinguished officer from the War of 1812. This period saw the area, part of the “Military Tract” designated by Congress, being settled by war veterans who received land grants.

A significant catalyst for early growth was the arrival of the Northern Cross Railroad in 1855, a predecessor to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. This development spurred an increase in the town’s population and further solidified its role as a regional center. Amtrak continues to service the area with 2 routes per day.
